An album for the winter. The ice and the cosiness of the winters bright short days is cited as an inspiration behind many of the tracks. Tom Donald's improvisation mastery captures these emotions in his signature cinematic tone. Not all of the songs possess the same sweetness and longing as you hear in "The Essence of Forever", "Silver Sun" the title track uses an array of baroque-like ornaments transformed into a contemporary landscape and there are dark moments too such as "Luminosity" which feels like something from a Messiaen piano work. There is a mysterious change of mood for "Orphic Dance" and "Plentitude Prelude" is a virtuosic display of Chopin meets Hans Zimmer demonstrating the composer's sonic brilliance on the piano. "Lento's" opening chords could feel like a pop ballad but unexpectedly emerges into a Mahler-like Adagio. The highlight of the album is "The Essence of Forever" where you can hear Jarrett-like sentiments and phrasings and this is a piece inspired by the composer's newborn daughter. A charming anecdote for winter displaying inspirational pianistic images.
